Edward Bartley/Barclay, Kirkdale, Liverpool

Postby ednatil » Sun Jun 05, 2011 8:03 pm

I'm trying to find out a bit more and previous generations of my 2x Great Grandfather Edward Bartley b1851 d1919 and Grandmother Margaret Ellen Bartley nee Harrison b1860. I haven't been able to trace back beyond the 1901 Census for either of them. I believe that they married around 1890. This may have been his second marriage as he would have been about 40,or possibly they had lived together before marrying. They lived in Liverpool in the Kikdale area at 16 Turton Street. Edward was a dock labourer. From the details of the 1911 Census they had 5 children Sarah 26, Ester 21, Margaret 17, William Harrison 14, Alfred Isaac (my Great Grandfather) 10 and May aged 5. Any information regarding any of the family would be greatly recieved.

Thank you.

Hi,

I decided to try looking for Esther dau Edward Bar*ley b 1890 Liverpool and came up with
the following on the 1891 Census :

Edward BARKLEY head,marr, labourer b 1851 Liverpool
Sarah BARKLEY mother , wid, b 1830 Cheshire
Sarah BARKLEY dau ,single, b 1884 Liverpool
Esther BARKLEY dau, single,b 1890 Liverpool
Address Toxteth Park , Liverpool

I thought this must be a transcription error but the image does say BARKLEY. I then tried 1881
and found Edward BARKLEY again ,still living with his widowed mother and brothers, and still
described as married but with no wife.

In the absence of any records for Edward BARTLEY before 1901 and given the tie in of both
Esther and Sarah from the 1911 Census , I would say that there is a strong possibility that
this is your family. ( Names did get confused when many couldn't read and write well or at all ).

I found a baptism for Esther on familysearch :

Esther BARKLEY 6 Oct 1889 St Cleopas,Liverpool , parents Edward BARKLEY and Jane Elizabeth.

I think this is worth pursuing . Good luck!

I've dug a bit more :

Edward BARCLAY father Henry
married 25 Jan 1875 St Mary Birkenhead Cheshire
Jane Elizabeth ADDISON father William Henry
J-M 1875 Birkenhead 8a 650

Edward BARCLAY father Henry
married 28 Jun 1891 Walton on the Hill St Thomas Liverpool
Margaret Ellen HARRIS father Isaac

Edward BARCLAY and Margaret Ellen HARRIS Toxteth Park , Lancashire
A-J 1891 8b page undecipherable

So it looks like your Bartleys are Barclays !
