Help with 1939 army uniform

Postby Stralachlan » Fri Apr 29, 2011 11:03 pm

The attached photos I think are of my great grandfather Francis Daniel Roberts (1887-1972). I beleive it to be a Surrey Regiment, and its dated 6 Dec 1939 which helps.

His son Stanley Ernest Roberts (1918-1944) served with the Queens Royal Regiment and was killed in Gradara. It cant be him as the person is too old.

Can anyone confirm the Regiment, and explain what someone this age might have been up to in 1939 in uniform? Its too early to be Dad's Army.

There were roles for people too old to fight in WW2.
For example my grandfather - who fought in WW1 in the Army - joined the RAF at the outbreak of WW2 and was in charge of a barrage-balloon depot in the Midlands.
So maybe this guy did something similar.
