Please help dating this photograph

Postby rslater32 » Mon Mar 07, 2011 1:44 pm

I have inherited this photograph, printed on glass, which has been represented to me as my 2x great grandparents, Thomas Thompson and Mary Ann Smith. Thomas and Mary Ann were married in 1850. Thomas Thomspon died in 1866, and Mary Ann remarried in 1872.

Could you advise me as to the date of this picture please.

With the style and shape of the Lincoln & Bennet on the table, coupled with the joinville neckwear that the gent is wearing and his overall appearance I would place a date of somewhere between 1850 and 1857 for this image. Could this have been an image to commemorate their wedding I wonder?

Sorry for slow reply but this helps me very much. The couple in the photo married in 1850 and were Mary Ann Smith and Thomas Thompson, my 2x great grandparents. Thomas died in 1866 and Mary Ann remarried in 1872. Given your dating evidence, I am now confident that the photo shows Thomas, which is the received family wisdom.
