Dating a photo

Postby NormandCarol » Sat Jan 29, 2011 3:37 pm

Does anyone know what date this could be and what occasion - I'm assuming it's Elizabeth's wedding and it is around 1870?
Thanks

Hi Carol

No - the photo is not 1870s - the costuming, hair and the fact that it is an ambrotype would suggest very early 1860s at the latest. Is it possible that the man with her is her brother? I doubt a married woman would sport ringlet style hair - particularly in the day time - the fashion was more for a smooth bun with hair parted in the middle (think Olivia de Haviland in Gone With the Wind). Her hair makes me think she is definitely a Miss not a Mrs at this point.

Just wanted to add that the plainess of the skirt and the fact that it seems to be more of a rectangular shape rather than gored and flounced would possibly even suggest late 1850s. The male's attire also fits with the time period of late 1850s very early 1860s.
