My grandma lived and died in Oldham. The story goes this photo is of her fiance who died in WWI. Any ideas about what military uniform it is?

I'm no expert (in fact I have no experience in uniforms whatsoever) but if he was from the Oldham area as well, which if that's where your grandma was born and bred then would it be reasonable to assume he was, could be be from a Lancashire regiment or a Pals regiment?

Neil Oliver's book, "Not Forgotten" is very good at explaining how regiments were formed.

Yes. Thanks. Infact Violet's brother(my great uncle) was in the Loyal North Lancashire regiment and died in 1919. However, it is not him in the photo. I wondered if there were any military buffs out there with any inner knowledge on uniforms!
