Help with Dutch family records

Postby lori_anne71 » Thu Sep 02, 2010 8:12 am

I have been trying to trace the Jewish side of my mother's family for quite some time now as they seem to be the most difficult to trace and for a long time I had not managed to get any further than finding out the name of my great grandfather's dad, Louis Isaacs.

Just last week I made some head way on this. By helping my nan move, I stumbled across some old photos and there was one of a relative I have never seen before. Luckily it had some writing on it which said "To my cousin Harry, with love from Ada"
My grat grandfather's name was Harry Isaacs, but he changed it for his boxing career to Harry Reeve.
I decided to do a random google search on Ada Reeve and found a treasure trove of information about her as it turns out she was quite a famous actress in her day and even found some clips of her performing on youtube!
Ada had also wrote an autobiography which I managed to find a copy of and now have in my possession.

In the first chapter, she talks about her father and the fact that he was born as Samuel Isaacs in Norwich, but later changed his name to Charles Reeves when he moved to London aged 16 and that his parents were Jews from Holland. She only gives her grandmother's name as Adele Kauper and that she was a Grand Opera singer in Holland in her youth.

I have not managed to get any further than this seeing as I have no idea where to find Dutch family records.
The closest I have come is the 1861 census where an Adelaide Isaacs lived in Norwich with her husband and several children including Lewis, Simeon and Julia ("Aunt Julia" being mentioned in the book). Only issue is that it gives the birth place of the parents as London, so this can't be right can it?! :(

Any help in either tracking down these elusive ancestors of mine, or at least someone to point me in the right direction of where to find Dutch family records would be truly appreciated!

Thanks a lot!

Hi Laurie,
I think, if you haven't done so already. You should send for one of the birth certs for either Simeon, Lewis or Julia.
On http://www.freebmd.org are the following which are possibly yours:
Julia Isaacs b Sept qtr 1848 Ipswich Vol 12 Page 360
Simeon Isaacs b Sept qtr 1856 Norwich Vol 4b Page 99
Lewis Isaacs b Sept qtr 1859 Norwich Vol 4b Page 114

As far as Dutch ancestors go, WDYTYA published an article in July 2009 about researching your Dutch ancestry. The following websites are mentioned, so could give you some guidance.
http://www.traceyourdutchroots.com
http://www.dutchchurch.org.uk
http://www.cbg.nl
Good Luck
