Are these navy uniforms?

Postby edlin1 » Wed Aug 25, 2010 1:33 am

This is a photo of my Great Grandfather Lewis Harvey Rouse and his Brother Henry James Rouse. They were fishermen in Lowestoft before the first world war and served in the navy (Royal or Merchant?) at some point. My grandmother remembers the small Ivory toys her father brought home for her and her sisters, so I assume he went overseas.
Anyone recognise the uniforms? I have been unable to trace either brother in the merchant navy records (BT 390/391 or 372) nor can I find any record in the WW1 medal cards.
The boys were born in 1871 and 1874.

I can confirm that these are Royal Navy uniforms.

I have pictures of my Grandfather wearing the same uniform, although some of them show him wearing a white undershirt, others the navy colour as in your photo.

As to finding any records, still working on that one.

You might want to try the following link, where they have the navy records to download for a small fee of £3.50 per record.

Unfortunately although they are both wearing RN uniforms, it would seem that only one was in the navy unless this picture was taken after the 1911 census.

The other downside to them being RN in WW1 would be their ages, Louis 43 and Henry 40, so more likely to be Merchant navy in WW1. Merchant seamen only received war medals if they actually travelled through a 'Danger Zone' designated by the admiralty.

May also have come in the category of 'Reserved Occupation' being fishermen.

In reply to the main query I would say that they definitely look like Naval uniforms - the reason why the first answer given said that he had similar photos, but that some had a dark jersey under the uniform while others had a white would be that the photos were taken at different times of the year ! This
still applied when I was doing my 2 years National Service in the Royal Navy from Jan. 1953 - Jan 1955 - in the summer months we wore a "white front" made of cotton cloth with a narrow blue border
around the square neck aperture; and in the winter we wore a blue woollen jersey with a round neck.
The jerseys were warmer, but rather itchy ! You can also clearly see the narrow black silk scarf worn under the blue collar - legend says it was black in mourning for Lord Nelson; the 3 white lines on the blue collar can also be seen quite clearly. As these 2 men were fishermen by trade they had almost certainly enrolled in the Royal Naval Reserve, and it is quite probable that they were engaged in duties such as patrolling coastal and harbour waters, or more dangerously mine-sweeping as much of the equipment and techniques for fish-trawling and mine-sweeping is very similar. Strangely enough although the work was dangerous it may not have given them any entitlement to medals which would have been automatic if they had been serving in France !
