Can anyone tell me which is the better of the various subscription sites, e.g. Ancestry.co.uk? or one of the others?
Many thanks.

Which records are you interested in accessing?

Hello,
to start with, Census and BMD, possibly armed forces in there somewhere also.

Only Ancestry has the WW1 Pension records - none of the other sites have those.

If you specifically want the Pension Record then Ancestry.

I have an annual sub with Ancestry. I also use FamilyHistoryOnline for Parish Records. You can buy £5 of credits with FamilyHistoryOnline which last ages - don't' seem to need many other sites and the commonwealth war graves site is free.

I actually prefer to use record offices and just use online sites to give me a head start.

Thanks FHA,
I was thinking about The Genealogist, heard anything about them? (It's a Christmas present from my wife - I can't afford it!)

Never used it I'm afraid. There are so many good free sites out there like Free BMD etc that I only really use Ancestry and FamilyHistoryOnline - don't seem to need much else.

FHA,
Thanks, does Ancestry have all the Census' for the whole country? - I tried and failed to get an answer on that one.
Also, what exactly is the subscription?

Cheers,

Ancestry has censuses for 1841 - 1901 for England, Wales and Scotland.

It's a bit hard for me to tell you how much it is because as I'm a member it only shows me upgrade prices to world membership. I have UK only membership. I just renew my sub annually so I can't remember how much it is, but all I know is that it has everything I need and most people will tell you that the best stuff is on Ancestry.

Yes, a good idea. It will give you an idea of what it has and how useful it is. Take the sub out when you have time to use it though - not when life is too hectic or you won't get the benefit of the trial.

Have fun! [:)]
