Help needed to identify a medal

Postby Harli_rose » Mon Nov 19, 2007 3:46 am

I need some help identifying a medal and I wondered if anyone here could help me. The medal was given to my mother with three others, two belonged to my grandfather (her father) and one to my great grandfather (her grandfather). I had no touble identifying the three but the other one is a mystery. This is a description, I haven't got a photo of the medal as yet:

Ribbon: vertically striped, the outside stripes are white the middle stripe is maroon, the ribbon is quite thick and quite frayed at the sides

Bar: there is bar on the ribbon, it is quite wide and has the letters CPC or CPG engraved on it

Medal: the medal is hallmarked silver and is in the shape of a cross (a maltese cross shape), in the centre of the cross is a circle and on it (in relief, not engraved) is a native african holding a shield and a spear standing in front of a hut. On the left, top and right hand arm of the cross are engraved the letters CPC or CPG

The back of the cross is blank and the cross is quite thin so no marking around the edge. The hallmarks are an anchor, a lion and a date letter which I think is for 1888. There is a pin at the top of the ribbon for attaching the medal to clothing. Does anyone know what this medal is?

can you take a photo of the medal and post picture of it on [link=][/link] military board. There are some very knowledgeable chaps on there!

or browse this excellent site - you should be able to identify the medal from here.

There is a good interactive medal identification tool here - Just follow the steps and the name of the medal should pop out the other end.
