Was this photo taken in India?

Postby Sue Wilkinson » Mon Oct 26, 2009 5:50 am

This is a photo of my grandfather Horace Edward Manning. Was this photo taken in India? If so when? What is the animal skin? Is that an elephant gun by his side?

The photo only came to light last year and is the only one known of Horace. He is somewhat of a mystery to the family as no birth certificate can be found for him. We have a marriage certificate and a death certificate. It is presumed in the family that he married my grandmother bigamously as he was 22 years older than my grandmother, Mabel Constance Turner. He died in 1949 in Lewisham and the death certificate says he was 80 years old, which makes his birth 1869. He was a civil engineer, and is also listed in passenger lists as a civil servant. He certainly went to Argentina, India, Bengal, Ceylon, Burma. He worked on railway lines and also for Burmah Oil.

Any help greatfully received.

I'm no expert but the skin looks to me as if it could be a leopard.
No idea about the gun though.
