Help needed with World War 1 military photo's

Postby juliemuirhead49 » Sat Sep 19, 2009 10:45 am

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to work out details about my Great Grandfather's military service and his brother's during World War 1 and have no idea about military history or uniform.

My Great Grandfather in SCAN0106 I know joined on the 14/05/1917 and was originally in the Hampshire Regiment, but it seems he was tranferred to the Berkshire Regiment some time in 1918 most likely post-war. He became Acting Lance Corporal on the 01/10/17 and he certainly has that stripe on his sleeve. Can anyone identify the cap badge for him please and any other detail on his uniform that may give further information about him.

SCAN0105 and SCAN0107 contain a picture of my Great Grandfather's brother Alfred Lloyd Bevis, I have been unable to trace his military records so I expect they were part of the ones that were destroyed, I have found a medal card for an Alfred L Bevis who was part of the Army Service Corps and 6 London Regiment. Can anyone tell me anything about his uniform which is slightly different in both pictures and/or identify his regiment. Also Alfred was 18 months older than Herbert so it is possible that he joined earlier.

Any help that someone can give would be much appreciated, thanks

Julie

Hi,

Scan0105: Is a Driver in the Army Service Corps. Nothing much about his uniform he is wearing spurs and holding a whip and looks to be wearing a 1903 pattern bandoleer.

Scan0106: Not too clear what regiment the badge is, do you have a close up scan of it ?

Scan 0107: The soldier on the left is a lewis gunner, the man on the right as above is a Lance Corporal and appears to be a marksman.

Hi Conor,

Thanks very much for your reply, I have attached a 600 dpi picture of my Great Grandfather's hat from Scan0106, I think it will be a Hampshires Badge as I know he was with them when he got his Lance Corporal.

Also can you tell me how you know that his brother on the left of Scan0106 is a Lewis Gunner, and if possible what the badge on his lower right sleeve means, I have attached a close up of this aswell.

Many thanks,
Julie

It's tough to tell what that cap badge is, it could be a Hampshire Regiment one alright.

The badge on his sleeve is for a lewis gunner.
