Issue 2 'John Burnell Lord Mayor of London'

Postby GerrardB » Mon Nov 05, 2007 1:26 am

With regards to the article on my ancestor John Burnell Esq, Lord Mayor of London (page 32-35 Issue 2); does anyone know the source for the painting "A detail showing John Burnell from Miller's inauguration of Lord mayor 1792" on page 34? Who was Miller? I've checked all Lord Mayors since 1169 and there's only one Miller in 1964.

Was it painted in 1792 as a retrospective scene? The reason I ask is John Burnell died in 1790.

Thanks
Gerrard

Sorry for the incorrect caption. The full title of the painting is: "The Ceremony of Administering the Mayoralty Oath to Nathaniel Newnham, November 8 1782". I hope that that answers your query!
