Identifying Military cap badges

Postby flamson24 » Thu Jun 25, 2009 12:33 am

A friend has asked me for advice on identifying which part of the army his ancestor served in from a photograph he has. Apparently the cap has a badge on it. Where is the best place for him to start looking?

Any ideas would be welcome, thanks.

Hi Flamson24,
You could, if your friend wants too, post the photograph on here where someone maybe able to identify the regiment from the badge or post the image on Rootschat where they have an armed forces board just for this type of thing. Either way someone may not only identify the regiment but also by looking at the uniform may be able to say just when it was taken. There are small indications to the uniform which enables those that know to do this.

There are also various books on regimental insigina that your friend can obtain at their local library that may help as well.

Or look at the website of one of the dealers who sells capbadges - the ones who sell replicas seem to have the best photos.
