Local directories

Postby Mark1973 » Wed Oct 31, 2007 4:10 pm

Hello kind & helpful people :)

I seem to be having trouble locating family members on old local directories, they appear on the census records but i can't seem to find them on the Trade or Private residents directories, was it only well-to-do families that appeared on these or something like that?

[size="2"]Mark,

The directories only list the principal inhabitants and trade persons. The editors would send their agents out to speak to clergymen, magistrates clerks, registrars, local gentlemen and the trade persons to collect information for the directory.

I'm afraid the Ag Labs of the Victorian world never made it into the directory.

The answer really depends on the time period and location plus what directory one is using.
The early directories concentrated on trades and the gentry, later directories included the principal resident of almost every address on a street.
