Michael Tynan 1842-1896

Postby callbrian » Sat Apr 25, 2009 8:56 pm

Hi,
My Greatgreat grandfather on my Grandmothers side was Michael Tynan born Ireland 1842 or 1844 which ever census entry is to be believed. The 1881 census has him as a soldier in the 5th Northumberland fusiliers, living at 25 Ravensdown also in the same census at the parade ground.
The 1891 census has him as a pensioner living at Ashampstead, Berkshire. He died in 1896.
Could it be possible he was invalided from the army and receiving an army pension?
Regards
Callbrian

Callbrian,

State pensions didn't come into being until the early 1900 s - which makes it likely Michael was receiving his pension from the army.
You could order/ see his army records on line which may give you the info you are looking for.
Researching :- Kelley, Greenwood, Buckley, Loring,

Gooch, Rogers, Nicklen, Clarke, Hull and more ,lol

I searched on TNA Catalogue and could not see a record for Michael Tynan between 1840 and 1900. Is it possible his records have not been indexed on the catalogue so you may need to search in person?
I also did a search on Google for "Tynan" and "5th Northumberland" but othing relevant came up.
There seems to be a place called Tynan in Kilkenny. Is it possible he came from there?

Hi
Thanks for the feedback.
I had a quick browse on the internet also. I also found him in the 1891 census as Tynham, living at 'Stubbles' Ashamstead, so I may try this to see if there is anything else there.
