Arthur Frederick Hills - WW1 photo help

Postby splodge64 » Sat Apr 18, 2009 11:56 pm

Attached is a picture of my husband's grandfather, Arthur Frederick Hills. Apart from the fact that he fought in the Great War (and, it is rumoured, was killed by his own gun), I know nothing about him. Can anyone provide any information based on this picture? Thank you!

There are a number of A Hills, or Arthur Hills on the [link=http://www.cwgc.org]Commonwealth War Graves Commission[/link] database but that may not help you identify your husband's grandfather's regiment if you know little or nothing about him.

As a first step, I suggest you join the [link=http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com]Great War Forum[/link] and post the photograph there to see if anybody on the forum can identify the regiment, either by uniform or cap badge. That might help you to pin down the correct entry in the Commonwealth War Graves Commission's records. As a member of the Great War Forum myself, I can honestly say that there are a lot of very knowledgeable people on that forum. Good luck in your hunt.

Interested in the surname SNELL circa 1910, Middlesex. and Claudia Vail nee Snell, living and married in Canada from about 1912/16.

Your husband's grandfather was with the Royal Artillary either as a gunner or driver (I would suspect a driver myself).

Thanks, guys. Have been able to confirm (with help from Ancestry.co.uk, the Royal Artillery Museum and the CWGC) that Arthur was a Bombardier or Acting Bombardier in the Royal Field Artillery, A Battery, 91st Bde.

Now I just need to trace a death certificate, which is proving elusive ...
