Help identifying a uniform

Postby pmoore » Tue Sep 30, 2008 2:50 am

Attached is a photo of my grandfather born 1880 in a military uniform. It has been suggested to me that he could have served in the Boer war. Can anyone help me in identyfying it.

If no-one on this forum is able to help can I suggest you post a copy of the photograph on the Great War Forum [link=][/link] as they have some very knowledgeable correspondents on uniforms.

I would suggest that your image shows a soldier from the Royal Artillary. If he was in the Boer War then it would have to have been the Second Boer War of 1899 to 1902 (the first was between 1880 and 1881). This date would also fit with him wearing a pillbox cap as this style of headwear was withdrawn from use in 1903.
