Photo on glass plate

Postby orange » Sat Oct 06, 2007 12:20 am

Hi,
I have the following photo which I'd love to be able to date so that I could work out which generation of my family he is. I think he is likely to be Warwick Matthew James WILLIAMS 1845-1922 or it could be his father John Bray Walter WILLIAMS 1822-1899 Plymouth, Devon.
The image is on a glass plate with a black backing in a small case.
Can anyone help?

We have a similar picture from my wife's side which dates from around 1860. Parts of the image probably have a greeny tint and, if you look at the clothing, buttons etc. are reversed as the process could only produce a mirror image. Can't remember what the process was actually called - maybe someone else can add that part.

Thankyou for replying about this eurogordi. I had wondered at this date but saw that they continued using glass plates until 1890s in travelling fairs etc
