Occupation: Coe Maker... any ideas anyone?

I have a (literally) distant relative who emigrated first to Canada and then went down to the US.
On his 1917 application to enter the US his occupation is Coe Maker and in the 1920 US census, it appears to be 'coremaker' although the writing is a bit of a scrawl.

Google came up with an entry in Fmp for Thompson Swaine in the 1881 census in Yorkshire who is also a 'Coe Maker'. (RG11 Piece 4473 Folio 4 Page 12)

I suspect it's something to do with metalworking. When he emigrated in 1909, he gave his occupation as 'Hammerman', in the 1920 census, he's working at a Naval Ordnance Plant.

Coremakers fall under the category of foundries and metal working occupations. Coremakers are responsible for making sand or wax molds, or cores, that are used in foundries for the production of metal castings.
