John Bell - Manchester

Postby Pete52 » Sun Apr 12, 2020 1:04 pm

I am trying to discover information about someone in my tree who has a very common name and I cannot work out which person I am related to. All I know is that his name is John(ny) Bell, he was born 1920s in Manchester, and he was a fish dealer of some kind in Clayton, Manchester in the 1970s.

My most promising lead is a John Bell who is listed in the 1939 register as the son of (Isa)bella Nolan and John Bell, born 1st May 1924 but I do not know if this John Bell was a fish dealer in the 1970s which would clinch it. I would be most grateful if anyone can tell me anything about the family from the 1939 register or can suggest ways by which I could find out if I have found the correct person.

Many thanks

Ancestry is free (partly) this weekend including the 1939 register which you will find interesting. To start you off, John Bell of 118 Slater Street, b 1 May 1924, was an engine fitter's labourer, apparently the son of John Bell and Isabella.

Hi Peter Kent,

Thank you so much for your reply! I was aware of John Bell’s early job as a Labourer for an engine fitter- which is registered when he was 15 years old. But, it’s his job in later life that I am very interested in finding out about and also his family details. If you can help in any other way, then I would be truly appreciative!

If he is the John born 1 May 1924 then his death was registered in Manchester in Apr-Jun 2000.

Probate was granted in Manchester on 2 Jun 2000 for a John Bell who died 6 April 2000, which may well be him. Copy wills are currently only £1.50, and should hopefully provide some family details.

Hi Avaline,

Yes, that appears to be the John Bell that I am interested in. I have now sent for his Will. Thank you so much for you support with this! It’s appreciated.
