James Joseph Murphy

Postby Norfolk Nan » Tue Apr 07, 2020 2:16 pm

In 1905 James Joseph Murphy married Eliza Jane Davison. The marriage certificate says he was 30 and a labourer, father Thomas (station master). In 1911 Eliza is back with her family and using her maiden name and says she is single and remains so into the 1940s. Clearly the marriage went wrong. I can't find anything to explain what and wondered if anyone here can throw up a bit of new information please? Thank you.

Hi Chris

Do you have the census details please in 1911 or any other details that may help with either of them?
Thanks Sally

Hi Sally

Firstly, apologies - Eliza Jane is actually Edith Jane. Her sister is Eliza Ann, but that's no excuse. I'm sorry for the mistake. In 1911 Edith is living with her widowed mother Kathrine Davison (that's how she is spelling it) at 51 Culvert Road, Battersea and 11 others. She is still calling herself Davison and single in 1939 when she is living at 131 Spike Road, Battersea.

As for James Joseph Murphy, he was baptised in 1875 to Thomas and Mary Murphy in Wexford, Ireland. They are Roman Catholic and I know the Davison's weren't. I've already found marriages reported in the newspapers for the Davisons so I wondered if that might be the case for Edith and her husband.

Nothing much to report
There is a death of a James Murphy Q2 1906 Chelsea 1A 247, which is the same registration district their marriage was registered in, and you may have already checked out.
I looked at the following, apologies if I am repeating your research.
Marriage witnesses Walter Davison, Edith’s older brother and Kate Riley, nothing obvious in 1911 census.
Abode at marriage 59 Slaidburn st Chelsea, people often used a “ convenience” address when marrying to save fees, but in case any ring a bell in 1900 the Pople and Shelley Families were living at 59 and in 1911 59 was inhabited by the Andrews, Hollis, Key, Pearce and Neale Families.
Looked at The Gazette website and newspapers in FMP but found nothing for them in the immediate years after their marriage.
Thoughts - following possibilities
James and Edith separate soon after marriage, possibly divorced in which case you would need to check the local record office when you can
It was a bigamous marriage? and therefore Edith returned home.
He simply left her
He may have been imprisoned
He may have joined the army etc
He may have died

Hi Sally

Thanks for looking. The family were at Slaidburn Street in 1901 (census), 1902 (another marriage) and then 1905 but were elsewhere by 1909 (Electoral Roll). I've had a bigamist in another branch and that hit the headlines, so, as she describes herself as single I have to assume the marriage collapsed without too much drama. If he had died she would have called herself a widow wouldn't she? Anyway, thank you again. I appreciate a second set of eyes
