Thank you very much everyone! I haven't had time to look into all the records you suggested yet, but I was very interested to read all the newspaper articles about William Mitchell senior and junior. I found William junior's death record in 1897, which includes the names of his parents, so yes, the baptism elsabels found is the correct one. They seem like a really interesting pair of ancestors to have - classic examples of Victorian industry and philanthropy with William Senior's involvement in the local parish board! I will see what else I can find out about them.

I'm curious as to what took Margaret Greenwood to Russia circa 1853. I can see the Greenwood family in the 1841 census, but haven't found them in 1851.

Hi Mo,

I'm curious too! Out of interest, which website did you get the Manchester baptism and marriage records for the Greenwood family from? I can't find them on Ancestry or FamilySearch.

Hi Rosemary - the Manchester records are on the (free) Lancashire Online Parish Clerk's website:

MoVidger wrote:This marriage in Manchester looks good for Margaret's parents:

Marriage: 12 Aug 1830 St Mary, Manchester, Lancashire, England
Thomas Greenwood - Mechanic, Bachelor, this parish
Mary Ann Street - (X), Spinster, this parish

Also, this baptism is looking very good for Margaret:

Baptism: 15 May 1836 Collegiate, Manchester, Lancashire, England
Margaret Greenwood - daughter of Thomas Greenwood & Mary
Born: 21 Aug 1833
Abode: Hulme
Occupation: Mechanic

Looks like the couple had these other children: William (bap 1831 Chorlton on Medlock), Emma (bap 1835 Hulme). Thomas (bap 1840 Manchester). A second son named William (born 1844 Hamer's Bldgs, Hulme). Mary Ann, (b 1847 Hulme).

One of the baptisms indicates Thomas' occupation as "pattern maker to mechanics".

In addition there is:
Manchester, St Mary, St Denys and St George
George bp 4 June 1843

Birth confirms mother as mmn STREET 1842 Chorlton v20 p265
