Eliza Bishop (née Archer)

Postby SDV » Mon Mar 02, 2020 4:31 pm

I am still struggling with the death of Eliza Bishop, who was last sighted at 73 Hornsey Road, Islington, as a 68 year old widow. Eliza was born in 1871 in Hornchurch, Essex. She married William Bishop in 1892 in Islington, where the couple lived until his death in 1924. Eliza appears to continue to live in the area up until the outbreak of WW2 and possibly longer.

Interestingly, as reported before on this forum, she appears in the 1938 and 1939 electoral registers as Annie rather than Eliza. I have no idea why this should be the case, as she had no middle name to my knowledge and in the 1939 Register is correctly recorded as Eliza.

Eliza had 6 children: Charles (b 1892), Gladys (b 1894), Herbert (b 1896) Stanley (b 1898), Leonard (b 1902) and Doris Ena (b 1907). I thought at one time that she might have gone to live with one of her children, but I have found no evidence of this. For the record, in 1939 Charles was living in Birmingham, Gladys in Southend, Herbert in Birmingham, Leonard in Hampstead and Doris in Morden.
I have no idea where Stanley was in 1939. Leonard though married seems to have been living apart from his wife in 1939. Gladys living in Southend, prompted me to send for the death certificate of Eliza Bishop in 1959 in Southend, but this proved to be a mistake.

I have no idea of what happened to Eliza and would welcome any help.

I see William & Eliza were married at St. Mary's Islington.
Might be worth a call to find out if the plot book mentions them.

Google is currently mapping Church of England gravestones along with plot book information.
So, you may find your answer sooner rather than later.

MayHam - it would appear that William Bishop was buried at Islington Cemetery in Finchley on 08 Dec 1924. I can, however, find no record of Eliza also being buried there.

Do you already have the Third Quarter 1949 Islington death record of Elizabeth Ann Bishop (05C 722)?

MayHam - I don't think so as the age according to the GRO is only 66, whereas my Eliza was born in 1871 and would have been 78. I know ages can be stretched, but that is rather large.

Hi,

Eliza Archer was born - according to her birth certificate on 23 Nov 1871 at Hornchurch in Essex. She was baptised on 31 Dec 1871 at St Andrew's in Hornchurch. I think the following link should work:
