Herbert Mends Gibson, 1891 census

Postby Rosemary Collins » Mon Feb 10, 2020 10:51 am

Herbert Mends Gibson was born (according to the 1939 Register) on 9 June 1868. His place of birth is listed as Plymouth in other records.

In the 1871 census he is found in Christchurch, Devon, and in 1881 in Plymouth. His parents were Charles George Gibson, profession listed as 'Cork Merchant & International Agent' and Amanda H J Gibson. Other siblings found in the census records are Richard Mends Gibson (b. around 1866), Archibald Gibson (b. 1870) and Kathleen Gibson (b. 1876).

In July 1895, according to civil registration records, Herbert married Adele Buckingham Andrews in Plymouth. In the 1901 census they can be found in Stretford, Lancashire; in the 1911 census is Sale, Manchester; and in the 1939 register in Hale, Greater Manchester. He achieved success as the General Manager of the Manchester Ship Canal and was awarded an MBE in 1918.

Can anyone find Herbert in the 1891 census, or alternative sources such as passenger lists?

The Mends message board has some reference to Gibsons - they are old messages.

There are lots of travel records for Adele Gibson and husband Herbert on ancestry, so you may well be right that they were out of the country.

Hi Rosemary,

Ancestry have transcribed the surname as "Gilson" - he's with his mother and sister in Plymouth in 1891:

Name: Herbert M Gilson
Gender: Male
Age: 22
Relationship: Son
Birth Year: 1869
Mother: Amanda H J Gilson
Birth Place: Plymouth , Devon, England
Residence Place: Plymouth, Charles, Devon, England
Registration district: Plymouth
Sub registration district: Charles
ED, Institution or Vessel: 5

Also, there's an 1887 newspaper mention for him:

The Cornish Telegraph 04 August 1887
“One Mile Bicycle Handicap” Herbert M. Gibson from Plymouth is one of the race entries.

Hi Mo,

Thank you very much - bonus news article as well! I love how the reporter describes the race as 'an unexciting one'.
