Gilhooly family

Postby Justin » Sun Feb 09, 2020 6:04 pm

Hi

I am trying to locate more information on members of the Gilhooly family who were in West Yorkshire for the 1891, 1901 and 1911 censuses. James was born around 1837 in Leitrim and his wife Ellen born in Tipperary, they had 4 children that survived namely James, Katherine, Margaret and Ellen, who were born it would appear from census records between 1873 and 1880 in different parts of Yorkshire. I can find no trace of their births in English records and wondered in fact whether they had been born in Ireland. I have found a baptism of a James Gilhooly with a father James and a mother Ellen (Stuart) in 1870 in Leitrim.

I thought that this may be possibility given that I have found no trace of them in the 1881 census. It is also possible their name was misspelled, however I have tried variants of the name.

Any thoughts on how to proceed would be appreciated
Justin

You may need to consider the children had Catholic baptisms. Did the Gilhooly family reside in the Bradford/Shipley area of West Yorkshire? If so, this guide may help with your search.

"The registers of 45 Yorkshire Catholic churches are therefore now at the National Archives in
London. The public libraries in Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield have microfilm copies of
those registers which relate to their districts. Leeds Central Library has copies of all the Yorkshire registers. This guide lists Roman Catholic registers available at West Yorkshire Archive Service offices".

Quick question: did son James Gilhooly live at Owlet Road in Shipley by 1939? If so, I think my in-laws knew this family! Did he have a daughter named Winifred (who's now deceased)?

Could they be Kilroy in Bingley in 1881?
Parents James and Helen
His details differ somewhat from later. But the children seem to match up re 1891 info.
James, 7, born Sheffield
Kate, 6, born Leeds
Margret, 3, born Bradford
Helen, 1, born Bingley

Possibly ridiculous, but there is a Kilroy birth in Keighley (for Bingley) in 1880!
KILROY, ELLEN
Mother's Maiden Surname: RYAN
GRO Reference: 1880 J Quarter in KEIGHLEY Volume 09A Page 180

Most of the others with that same GRO ref can be found in Bingley in 1881.

Possible marriage?
March 1873 Sheffield 9c 612
Killooly, James
Ryan, Ellen
(plus two others, William Binks and Ann Whelan)

Would make a bit more sense of Kilroy perhaps.
