Charles William Wilson
Tue Jul 24, 2012 1:28 am
My great grandfather was Charles William Wilson. I only have two facts:
1 - He married Eliza Annie Hill on 29/4/1888 and named his father as Henry (a painter)
2 - He was residing at 49 Henley Street, Battersea, Surrey in the 1901 census with his wife Eliza and children Charles, Frederick, Ellen, William (my grandfather) and John.

Although the census states he was born in 1868 in Lambeth, I have never found any record of his baptism or registered birth. In the 1881 census their is a Charles Wilson aged 13 in Barnados Home, 18-26 Stepney Causeway, London, Middx and another in Lambeth Workhouse School, Elder Road, Lower Norwood, Lambeth, Surrey. I would like to hear from anyone with any information on either of these establishments. Any information on any Charles William Wilson would be welcome. He was a house painter by trade and mixed his own colours. I am unable to find him in the 1911 census although his wife Eliza was in Wandsworth Union Workhouse and my grandfather William was sent to HMS Exmouth training ship for boys.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

There is a school admission entry on 21 August 1876 in Turin Street School, London for a Charles Wilson, father Henry. Charles birth date is given as 10 april 1867. Could this be your Charles William?

Hi
I notice from the 1911 census that Eliza and the younger children seem to be in the workhouse.
Charles it looks like is in Hertfordshire at Furneux Pelham
Charles 44 married 19 4 ch 2 alive and 2 dead House painter and decorator St Pancras
lodging
John Bailey 74 widower farm lab FP Herts
Louise Annie 30 daughter housekeeper FP.

It makes me wonder if this could be his baptism
Christ Church St Pancars
Charles William Wilson 15.12.1868 privately s of Eliza Wilson 7 Albany st North.
In 1871 Eliza seems to be a saleswoman age 31 born Soho living at 11 Camden Cottages St Pancras.

Eliza could then have married or become involved with a 'Henry'

Though he's got more than two children alive, and married nearly 23 years before the 1911 census.

Many thanks to avaline for the link to the old thread.

Both baptised at St Saviour Battersea on July 22 1892, parents Charles William and Eliza Wilson living at 8 Chesney Street.

There seems to be a page missing with the 1891 census with Chesney Street jumping from number 6 to number 18 (schedule 312 to 320) on findmypast. Could explain why I can't find them in 1891.

1892 electoral register has a Henry Albert Wilson at 8 Chesney Street, Battersea (was not listed in 1891)

Not sure that there are surviving A+D registers.
Creed registers have Charles, Eliza discharged 27 March 1911

Charles has so many admissions that he is on the page twice (plenty of earlier ones for the family of course)

The next lot of entries seem to indicate that Eliza was readmitted with Florence on the same day, 27 March 1911
Charles on the 26th June. Also admitted John, Albert.

William sent to the Exmouth 9 June 1909. Mother in workhouse, names a friend.

Still with those parents in 1881.

Well it looks as if number 8 Chesney Street is in the 1891 census (on ancestry), though we can't actually see the house number. Piece 421 folio 141 page 48
Family is
Henry A Wilson 61 Market Porter, born Warwick
Mary J Wilson 52 Charwoman London Old Kent Road
Thomas W Wilson 16 Errand Boy London St James
Walter J Wilson 10 London St James
Ada Wilson 6 London Battersea

Tracing them back to 1871, St. James Westminster
piece 138 folio 19 pages 29 + 30
9 Marshall Street
Henry Wilson 39 Dresser, born Warwickshire
Mary Jane Wilson 30 Dresser + Laundress, born Locks Fields Kent Road Surrey
Henry Albert Wilson 7 St Anne's Westminster

Struggling with this family in the 1881 census, and not only with that!

A couple of possible Battersea school records. A few Westminster baptisms (not Charles)
For later, I'll throw in marriage of Alice Letitia Wilson to William Frederick Stone, 24 March 1893, St Stephen Battersea!
Thomas William Wilson, son of Henry + Mary, born 10 March 1875 on Westminster baptism, Thos Wm Wilson, son of Henry, born 10 March 1876, on Battersea school record.
Walter James Wilson, born 1880...

Update!
Have now got hold of the baptism of Walter James at St. Thomas Regent Street, 14 Dec 1880
Parents Henry + Mary Wilson
Abode 9 Cross Street
Father a Porter

9 Cross Street is multi-occupied in the 1881 census
piece 123 folio 106 pages 43 and 44
One of the families there, on page 44, is
Henry Hobley 48 Labourer, born Warwickshire
Mary Hobley 42 Charwoman London
Henry Hobley 17 Labourer Soho
Charles Hobley 11 Scholar St James
Ellen Hobley 7 Scholar St James
Thomas Hobley 4 Scholar St James
Louisa Hobley 3 Scholar St James
Walter Hobley 5 mos St James

Other baptisms at St Thomas
Ellen Wilson, 26 Nov 1873, born 3 May 1872
Thomas William Wilson, 12 May 1875, born 10 March 1875
Louisa Wilson, 16 April 1878, born 15 March 1878

All baptisms - parents Thomas + Mary
Abode 9 Cross Street
Father a Porter

So, the Wilsons are under a different name in the 1881 census! Confirms Charles still with them, age 11.
