Mary Ann Brewster 1881 & 1891

Postby phsvm » Mon Jan 27, 2020 4:01 pm

I'm having difficulty tracing Mary Ann Brewster after the 1871 census. She was born in Sleaford, Lincs around 1827 and from all census returns up to 1871 she's in the town In 1871 she's running a high class 'boarding' house and was certainly not without finances.

She was a widow so I wondered if she'd remarried but I can't find and likely marriages. The only death I can find that seems likely to be her is in Spilsby, although I'm doubtful whether this is her, in 1898. She must have been somewhere for the census returns of 1881 and 1891.

Can anyone have better luck in finding her than I've had?

There is a Maria Brewster, right age, who was living in Dudley in 1891. The index on ancestry says she was born in Stafford, Lincolnshire, it's certainly not that as Stafford is of course in Staffordshire. It may be Sleaford, Lincs.

I think you're right Junkers, looks like Sluyford.

Thanks for finding this one

It certainly fits except that I can find no reason why on earth she ended up in a completely different part of the country and to which, on the face of it, she had absolutely no connection.

I've now found her as Mary Ann Brewster in Sparkhill - so the same place - in 1901, living on own means and giving her place of birth as Quarrington in Lincolnshire where I know the correct Mary Ann was married.

Looks as if this is her.

I've now tracked her in 1881 - in Dorset!

She certainly moved around. I'm now just missing her death so if anyone can help with that I'd be very grateful.
