Birth searching

Postby MKJones143 » Sun Dec 22, 2019 3:46 am

Hi, I am hoping someone can help me locate the family of my ggrandfather who migrated from Fife Scotland to Australia (he lived in Burra, SA in late 1850s and then settled in Moonta, SA in 1870s).
Here is what I know:
His name was William Young, born between 1830-1839 somewhere in Fife, Scotland, father's name Robert.
Here is what I think are possibilities:
HIs second name was "Bruce" and I am led to believe this is a name carried down through generations so possibly a marriage between Young and Bruce somewhere way back.
He was a miner in Australia and so possibly could have lived in a mining district in Scotland and may have come from a mining family.
His children's names were Elizabeth, William, Isobel, Catherine, Frederick, Robert so there is a possibility that his grandparents may have shared one of these names.
My DNA shows connections to the South East areas of Fife.
This has been a brickwall for a few years now and I would love another set of eyes or alternatively another family historian with connections to a Young family from Fife who may also have a family connection to a Robert Young or William Young in their family.

Hi,struggling with this person.
Cannot find anything on scotlands people other than 10 births to a father robert in the relevant
time frame.
One thing I did notice was a marriage albeit in Montrose to Robert Young,a Weaver,to
Catherine Bruce on the 16thFeb 1840.Probably nothing to do with it but the Bruce cropped up.
Anyway good luck
Grace. :D

William's 1887 marriage record on FMP below. Could his family in Scotland have been Wesleyan? If so, you may want to read this WDYTYA tutorial for researching Wesleyan Methodist ancestors:

How do you know he was from Fife?
Do you have his immigration record? And what does it say?

The 1841 census for Abbotshall, Fife has a William Young age 10, his sister Jean age 11 with parents Robert and Mary. Robert is 35 years, a hand loom weaver. Mary is age 30. All are born in Fife.

I can’t find a baptism for this William ..... or fir Jean..... still looking......

All four are still there in the 1851 census too. William working as a linen worker. Father and children born in Kirkaldy, Fife. Mother born in Dysart, Fife.

This Robert Young was baptised 2 March 1800 in Kirkaldy. His parents are William Young and Isabel Hay. With the name ‘Isabel’, it could be your family.

Just to add to Neale1961's findings, it appears this Robert Young had a sister, Agnes (Young) Bailie, who Robert and his wife were living with in Lochee, Angus in 1861. He died in the Third District of Dundee in 1867 leaving his wife, Mary Bogie, (who he married in 1838). The certificate was witnessed by his son, William (born about 1831/2. His sister, Jean, was born about 1830/1).

I was hoping the above Robert was the same as Robert Bruce Young who married Mary Paul in Gargunnock, Stirling in 1830. I can't find anything on them other than a Mary Young was buried in Polmont, Stirling in 1834. No idea if they are the same person.
