Joseph Lillington - occupation help

Postby Geoff_T. » Fri Dec 13, 2019 9:14 pm

I am wondering if anybody would be able to help me in deciphering the occupation of my 4x Gt Grandfather Joseph Lillington. The only census return I have been able to find him in is in 1841 and I know that his two sons were tobacconists but my best guess for Joseph (Josh) would be Pauper.
I tried looking for a transcription but Ancestry and FMP have left a blank and The Genealogist doesn't even list him, although they do list his family.
Any help would be gratefully received.

I’d agree with pauper.

Thanks, it does seem odd that his 2 sons have got jobs which they appear to do reasonably well at but he is a pauper. I haven't managed to get any further back with him yet although a tree on Ancestry appears to have him originate in Dorset. Wouldn't Bedminster have sent him back there, or would that only be the case if he was looking for help from the parish ?

Yes Pauper but if you squint looks like Vampire.

Looks like he died in 1843 but in 1846 Henry has him down as a farmer, but not deceased.

Firstly, if he'd spent long enough working in Bedminster, he'd probably have acquired settlement there so that his place of birth was no longer relevant.

So far as I understand it, sending back to your place of settlement generally only happened if you were either claiming relief or the authorities felt that you were liable to do so. In this case, if his sons were able to support him, they might not have bothered. Though as I say, there must be a good chance that he'd gained settlement there anyway.

I thought I saw Vampire too at first which may explain the strange feelings on a full moon ! So grateful his first name wasn't Vlad

Strange that George is there in the census's all his life but no sign of wife Mary and son Henry until their deaths.

Says they were all born in the county. If you can find Mary in 1851/61 it could give where she's from and possible where she married.

Found Henry in 1851 on FMP but not on TG. Put the address in he comes up but not if you search by name..

Thanks Temp4r, some more work for me. Will have to take it a bit steadier as I went to turn on the computer to check and have put my back out, hence the late reply, but onwards and upwards

In 1851 I think Mary is recorded (on FMP) as Sillington - HO107/1944/275/23

She is in Mangotsfield with a family named Lawrence, and gives her PoB as Bincombe, Dorset.
