UK Directories

Directories can be a good source of information.

Ancestry (pay website) contains a database "UK, City and County Directories, 1766 – 1946" located in Schools, Directories & Church Histories
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/collections/3145/

A free database (which is also included in the above Ancestry database) is
"Historical Directories of England & Wales" from the University of Leicester
http://specialcollections.le.ac.uk/digi ... 16445coll4
For those with Ancestry access, access through Ancestry is recommended

A free database for Scotland is Scottish Post Office directories, from National Library of Scotland
https://digital.nls.uk/directories/

A database from National Library of Scotland is available on Archive.org (free) https://archive.org/details/scottishdirectories

Generally the NLS website is better for Searching, but the books on Archive.org are easier to browse. Sometimes the Search may not be completely accurate, as it is derived from OCR (optical character recognition), so you may need to Browse the actual book

Cheers
