What happened to Martha?

Postby TCJ » Wed Dec 04, 2019 10:56 am

Hi,

I was wondering if I could please ask for some advice? I am trying to find out what might have happened to the sister of one of my great-grandmothers and have hit a brick wall in my research.

Her name was Martha Leech and on 22 November 1862 she married a man named Jesse Watts-Russell in St James, Westminster.

Jesse Watts-Russell was a very wealthy landowner and much can be found about him online. Martha was his 3rd wife and they lived together in his home Ilam Hall (as on a copy of the 1871 Census attached).

In 1875 though Jesse Watts-Russell passed away leaving everything to his eldest son and this is where I then have had a really hard time finding out what actually happened to/became of Martha.

Through a recent search on Ancestry I did locate one record which looks like she remarried a couple of years after her husband died, but beyond this marriage record I have not been able to find anything and to be honest, I am not even really sure that I completely understand her marriage record. It says that she married a man named Alott Lodge at the British Embassy Abroad, Great Britain. Does anyone please know what this means? And why she would have got married at the British Embassy?

The full details for this marriage record are:

Great Britain Select Marriages, 1797-1988
Name: Martha Watts-Russell
Gender: Female
Marriage Date: 16 May 1877
Marriage Place: British Embassy Abroad, Great Britain
Spouse: Alott Lodge
FHL Film Number: 1929840
Reference ID: P 222

I have not been able to find out what happened to Martha between her husband dying and her remarriage, or what happened after she remarried.

Martha was born in Gloucestershire and her father was Irish. By the time that she remarried (to the best of my knowledge) all of her siblings and her parents has passed away. She did have a nephew and 2 nieces though and 2 of those emigrated to the USA in/around the late 1870s.

This is all I know. If anyone could possibly please help me to find out what may have happened to Martha and where she ended up living I would be most grateful. Thank you all so much in advance.

I noticed on the census that there is quite an age gap she is 39 and Jesse is 84. An arrangement that some of the children might have found disturbing - there is a TV programme on at the moment called Goldiggers!

There is a will and the sons were the executors - it would definitely be worth getting the will to see if she was taken care of or frozen out.

Name: Jesse Russell [Jesse Watts-Russell]
Death Date: 26 Mar 1875
Death Place: Staffordshire, England
Probate Date: 30 Jun 1875
Probate Registry: Principal Registry

It was actually resworn later with additional money

Wedding was in Paris embassy to Allott Lodge - record and image on ancestry RG 33: Foreign Registers and Returns, 1627-1960 1 May 1877.

There is a 1911 census Name: Martha Allot Lodge, 70, born in Cheltenham, Gloucester, England in Wandsworth - with a Patrick Allot Lodge. Both say they are married for 33 years.

They also show up in 1901 Martha and Patrick Allott Lodge. She is stated as 54, born in Cheltenham, living in Streatham, with an Aunt Jane Leach also present.

Independent means, servants suggests a moneyed background

Hi Templ4r, I'm so sorry to bother you again but I can't seem to locate the record that you mentioned. I was wondering if I could please ask where you saw this record and what the name of his son's widow was please? Thank you so much.
