Where did the Garwoods of East Bergholt go?

Postby pforkes » Mon Dec 02, 2019 12:01 am

William Garwood was born on 25th Match, 1843 in East Bergholt, Suffolk. On 3rd November 1883 her married Eva Jane Sage. Eva was born in 1862 (also, in East Bergholt).
They had five children:
1882 Sarah A Garwood(?)
1883 William Garwood
1885 Frederick James Garwood
1889 Annie Jane Garwood
1891 Francis Harry Garwood

All were born in East Bergholt.

After the 1891 census they all disappear and I am guessing that they emigrated, but I am unable to prove this or even determine if or when they did emigrate.

When I get truly stuck, I turn to you guys. Perhaps one of you can find what I cannot, so thank you in advance.

Thank you for your prompt reply.

I had also noticed those same passages across the Atlantic but initially dismissed them because it was individual children rather than the whole family.

The Guardians record gives the poor law union as Samford, and there is a death for William Garwood aged 47 in Samford in 1892.

The Ipswich Journal 20 August 1885 mentions Eva Garwood alias 'Pincher' and Sarah Garwood alias 'Smut' of East Bergholt assaulting the landlady of the Curriers Arms.

Avaline, looks like the family all have aliases...

23 Dec 1887

applicationwas made by Mr. S. W. Scoging, agent to Mr. Alfred Garnham, East Bergholt, for an order of eviction against William Garwood, alias Gilpin, who refused to give up possession of a tenement which he hired month by month from Mr. Garnham, 'notice to quit having been given to him on the 11th of October.-Mr. Scoging having proved that the tenancy was monthly, the order was granted

4 Sep 1888

Eva Garwood, married woman, was charged by Annie Ratcliffe with assault upon her on the 20th ult.—From the statement of the complainant it appeared that the date named the defendant’s children came on to her land and she ordered them off. Thereupon, defendant came up to her and slapped her face, which was the assault complained of.—After hearing the defendant’s statement,in which she did not deny committing the assault, the Magistrates decided to dismiss the case, it was evidently petty personal quarrel. Each party was ordered to pay ss. expenses.

I think the Sarah Garwood is the wife of Richard, she climbs in a window and steals some things from a Widow. Possibly William and Richard are brothers? Both charged with Assault in 1869.
