Brick wall

Postby Amazinggrace » Thu Nov 21, 2019 3:04 pm

Hi,I am hoping someone can help break down a wall.
My great grandad was one of eleven children to John Carruthers and Margaret Tennant.
I have birth marriage and death for all bar one. Some of the children did not survive to adulthood.
The family were as follows:
James Tennant Carruthers b.20/2/1856 Cambusnethan(my great grandad)
Robert Carruthers b.30/11/1857 Cambusnethan. d.31/12/1859 Lesmahagow
Mary Campbell Carruthers b.10/7/1860 Lesmahagow
Robert Carruthers b.14/9/1862 Lesmahagow
John Carruthers b.25/6/1864 Lesmahagow
Margaret Carruthers b.10/12/1866 Lesmahagow
George Carruthers b.19/11/1869 Lesmahagow
Agnes Alexander Carruthers b.19/1/1871 Carluke
Mary and William Carruthers (twins)b.6/10/1873 Carluke
Williamina Carruthers b.16/121874 Carluke.
The second Robert is proving the elusive one. All I have is his birth in 1862.I can find no marriage or death for him.Any assistance would be gratefully received.
Thank You
Grace :D

Just to clarify - have you got the rest of the family (apart from the last born children) on the 1871 census without Robert?

Long shot, but there is a Robert Carruthers born Scotland aged 23 a police constable, boarder at the police station in Stockton, Durham in 1881 (RG11/4895)[/i]
Sorry brain now in gear, the 2nd one would only have been 19 :-(

Still a long shot, but there is a Robert Carruthers aged 30 a police constable in Stockton, also born Scotland, in the 1891 census....could be the same one with different age given;
plus one aged 20 in Liverpool in 1881 a commercial traveller at the Compton Hotel,
and one born Scotland 1863 in the 1881 and 1891 censuses in Mansfield, Notts, a clothier/merchant taylor clothier.

It's very frustrating. As paulr1949 says, there are Robert Carruthers possibles in England later in the censuses, but as your Robert would only be 9 in 1871, you'd think he would still be fairly close to home, perhaps staying with relatives. Have you tried scotlandspeople.gov.uk ?

Has the Robert Carruthers death in Lesmahagow in 1862, ref 649/ 131, been eliminated?
I notice that for 1862 no ages seem to be given in the death index (ScotlandsPeople). The years either side also have mother's maiden name.

Hi
I got it from ScotlandsPeople, but there is no further info about it in the index. So it might be your Robert, but no way of telling without seeing the image.

Thanks ianbee,I couldn't see a death for him on scotlands people.
I will investigate tomorrow. That would certainly explain why I only had his birth.
Thanks again
Grace. :D
