1881 census land query

Postby Julieannr » Mon Nov 11, 2019 2:31 pm

On the 1881 census I have ancestors living on/at Conservative Land, Holmer and Shelwick, Hereford, Herefordshire. There seem to be a lot of families living on this particular land. Does anyone have any idea what this land is? (RG11/591). Thank you.

No, but have you looked at the Victoria County History for Herefordshire, the Herefordshire archives might also be able to help.

Google "Conservative land society".

They are in most counties. The Conservatives buy land and build houses on it. Apparently the Liberals started it and the Conservatives copied the idea as it was politically good.
