Some good news.
Catholic Archdiocese of Southwark Archives

Says that registers over 100 years old are currently being digitised by findmypast. Available in late 2019.

Hopefully Findmypast will eventually shed some light on the mystery!

On Ancestry, that 1891 Census for George Arthur Howes & family is indexed as Hewes. I checked the whole of Castle Street to see if I could find Ernest Edward & family under an obscure surname, but without success. Over the years their surname has been recorded as House, Howse, Hawse, Howe, Hawe as well as Hewes!

That image is from the Genealogist where nothing comes up on the indexes but the street is searchable.

In 1911 Johanna is born in High st Boro, that comes up in 1891 but only from about nos 151 to 270,on piece 346 from folio 163 and beginning of 344 and folio 73 London. I can't find earlier numbers so must be on another piece. Can't find High St on Surrey.

So If anyone can find the rest of High st, they might be there.

* Found the low numbers at the beginning of piece 342

Wasn't Ernest and/or his father a brewery assistant? During the 1890s, Hook & Graham (hop factors) were located at 87 Borough High Street, SE. Just thought I'd mention it, as Johanna was born at High Street Boro (as per the 1911 census).

Father was a Labourer and Ernest was a waterside labourer in 1901 and a carman, general carrier in 1911.

I've "walked the streets" through all of 342 and 344, nothing.

George Arthur Howes is a "Brewer" in the 1871 census, and a "Brewer's Assistant" on his children's 1869 baptisms. The occupation of "carman" was affiliated with the brewing trade, in addition to other trades. Brewery carmen transported grains and/or barrels in carts.

Thanks once again to everyone for all the info.

As daft as it sounds, it has never occurred to me to check Borough High Street in the 1891 Census! It would make sense that maybe they moved from there to Castle/Camelot Street where Johanna's sister Louisa was born in 1892.

Just shows what fresh eyes can do!

Hi, the other thing which may help is that you believe her date of birth is 24 July 1894, go on to the gro government website and request an empty search. Hope this may help
