Where do I go now?

Postby samdow » Tue Oct 22, 2019 9:00 pm

Can anyone point me in the right direction of where to search next? I'm struggling to find any lead on this couple and I can't find a copy of their marriage in the parish registers.

William Dowsett married Jemima Brown (Widow) 23rd March 1804 in St Saviour Southwark, London.

I have tried searching for Jemima's previous husband but all lead to a brick wall. William and Jemima had two children in Shadwell in 1807 and 1810.

I'd really like some tips as to where I should search next.

Many thanks

Sam

Hello
There are two possible marriages for Jemima
Jemima joy to Isaac T/Sobasky Browne 2.10.1796 at Newington St Mary
or
Jemima Taylor to Timothy Brown widower at Whitechapel 28.12.1800.

You can try searching for either hisbands death .On both she makes a mark which is consistent with the 1804 marriage.
Jemima is buried at Shdawell st Paul 15.3.1818 age 48 years.
She is of Foxygoose Yard.

I would guess that Jemima is from Southwark and they are marrying in her parish. So look south of the river for her.
William is a coal meter on the children's baptisms at Shadwell and that's where I'd look for him.
There are several baptisms at Bethnal Green
William 4.10.1786 and 23/1/1785 s of John and Mary a weaver St Mathews Row
William s of William and Mary 26.2.1775 weaver born 11 inst
William s of Johnathon and Rachel born 16.10.1783 bapt 16.3.1804 Bethnal Green.(Johnathon a bricklayer and plasterer 1740-1805)
Before the wedding perhaps?
I can't see a burial for William but that is what you need to find,it should give an age.So it's a long plough through the burials of St Paul Shadwell for a start.

You could also try Wills for either of them and for potential parents of the couple ,hopefully mentioning grandchildren. This involves London and PCC Wills.
I'll take a look on Ancestry and get back to you if i find anything.

No sign of wills but William Dowsett Gloucester St Shadwell renting 1795 16 shiliings 4d of Grimstone.
1817 and 1819 and 1821 Dowsett no first name renting Farmers St off Mary Campers 12 shillings
After that there is a Dowcett at New Gravel lane Dragon Green Alley until 1829 but again no first name.
