Where is Mayne?

Postby Brian Chatters » Mon Oct 07, 2019 7:54 pm

I have a letter of administration from the Cambridgeshire archives which references John Chatteris of Mayne, dated 1495. Does anybody know where Mayne is? I have looked at online maps from the 17th century for Cambridgeshire and for the neighbouring counties of Huntingdonshire and Northamptonshire without any success. I've also searched online and checked a book that I have which is a translation of the Doomsday Book as it lists the names of the places in England as they were known in the 11th century but, again, I have had no success.

Pronounced ‘May-nee’ rather than ‘Mania’ just in case you need to know. Having grown up in the Fens I know it’s one of those names that is often pronounced wrongly!
