Missing 2x Great Grandad Gower

Postby MrsRosie72 » Sun Oct 06, 2019 4:36 pm

Hi everyone

My 2xGG was Earle William Gower, born 1850 in Bromley, Kent. He changed the spelling of Earle/Erle/Earl on census records and sometimes went by the name of William. I have found census records, all his children’s banns and marriage certificates that record him living in Leeds, but absolutely nothing prior to 1874. He died in Leeds in 1918. It’s as if he didn’t exist before ending up in Leeds, the seems to be everywhere. He married (supposedly) Sarah Ann Wright who was born in Crowlands, Lincolnshire.

Gower was a very popular name in Kent and none of the birth records seem to fit. I’ve tried variations on the spelling of Gower but have well and truly hit a brick wall. I do wonder if he adopted the name Earl.

Any suggestions to further my research gratefully received.

FMP has this military service record with images. This chap was discharged in April 1872. He served in India for nearly 7 years. But as you say, Gower is a common name in Kent.

I don't think that this is the correct man, although Bromley is 11 miles from Sevenoaks and the date of birth is wrong, he may not have been truthful about his details though.

I have my doubts this is the correct man, as well. But I wanted to mention the Army record anyway... just in case. Had a quick search on FreeBMD, but couldn't see a Earl(e) William/William Earl(e) Gower born 1845 to 1855 in Kent. Can't find a marriage record for him either. And he doesn't seem to appear in the 1861 or 1871 census -- unless he's under a different name?

I agree, maybe a relative. I can't find his birth either...

I thought I'd found him in 1861 by looking for a marriage of a Gower to an Earl. Found one with a William Earl Nephew aged 6, but then I found his marriage.

I've gone through the Birth Index scans on Ancestry from 1848 to 1852 for Gower, there are no Earls in any spelling and only one William and he's not from around the area in Kent.

So, either he wasn't registered, lied about his age, where he was born or he has adopted Gower for some reason.

I can't find any nonconformist baptism, but I'll check again.

Onwards and upwards Eh.. he's out there somewhere..

Does that include 1901? As I can't see the family on that.
Electoral registers for then have William Erle Gower at 51 Waterloo Street in Leeds (quite a long run of him there).
The description of ED 5 in Leeds South East in 1901 says that it includes Waterloo Street 3-51 & 2-48, but I haven't found number 51. It might perhaps have been added on a final page that's gone astray, or it might be me that's missing the obvious (quite likely)

Looking at the scans RG13/4215-83 and 49 Waterloo street + 18 Coopers Court. John Wray a Grocer, is the last, so I assume that's a corner house/shop to the Court. Probably 51 is not enumerated for some reason

1871 there's a Sarah Ann Wright born Crowland, 1850 at Bacup, Lancs. With a married woman from Crowland.
It's not that far from Leeds..

also, there is a Quarter sessions document from 1872 with mention of Erle Gower, Servant man from Bacup.

Coincidence???
