Look up request - The London Metropolitan Archives

Postby wecanbeheroes » Thu Sep 19, 2019 4:38 pm

Hello,

I'm not sure if this is the best place to post this but...

I wonder if there is anyone here who is planning a visit to The London Metropolitan Archives sometime soon, who might be willing to look something up for me?

The record is for an inquest of my ancestor Frances Louisa SLADE who died tragically age 11, on June 4th 1890, whilst she was a patient in Evelina Children's Hospital, Southwark.

I have the record reference number, (CLA/042/IQ/01/070 - inquest number 121) but sadly, I'm not able to get to the LMA myself.

I would be really grateful if someone could look this up and take digital photos of the documents for me.

Many thanks, Jacqui :)

Jacqui,

The document is certainly not at The National Archives and may be at the London Metropolitan Archives, do you know where this reference has come from?

I was given the reference in an email from London Metropolitan Archives, in 2012 (yes, I've been trying to get hold of these inquest documents for a long time, but life's been getting in the way!) but I was looking on The National Archives website in the last day or 2 and found some records relating to Evelina Children's Hospital and in my excitement failed to notice that (as you correctly say) the records are indeed held at the London Metropolitan Archives. Looks like I need to edit (or re-post) my request. Thanks for your help with this :)

A mention of the upcoming inquest in a Sunday newspaper of 8 June 1890. Attached. Have her as Florence in error.

Frances Louisa was buried at Kingston upon Thames, 11 June 1890

I'm sure you knew all that.

Index to Southwark Coroner's Inquests,1861 - 1901
Provides the name of the deceased, the full date of the inquest, the number of the inquest within its year and the verdict/cause of death
1 volume
Reference CLA/042/IQ/01/098
Not available for general access. Please use microfilm X085/184

There are three boxes of Southwark inquests for 1890, CLA/042/IQ/01/067 - 069
Presuming Frances Louisa's will be in one of the 1890 boxes rather than in one for 1891. I mean, it might be inquest 121 in 1890, but it would be wise to check.

Yes, I had already found the Reynolds Newspaper clipping, that's what alerted me to there having been an inquest. Thanks for finding it for me though, I really appreciate you going to the trouble. I've tried to find the subsequent article that I was hoping had been published with the inquest findings in, but to no avail.
I'd also found the burial information too (but again, thank you) as Frances Louisa died just 7 after her Mother (Frances Emma) died of TB (Nov 1889) leaving my Gr Grandfather (Walter) widowed with 3 children under 10 to bring up alone. Sadly he died too in Nov 1980, which left my Grandfather aged 10 and his 2 younger siblings orphaned - a long way around telling you that I'd found all of them in that same burial register.
I've also got this http://www.hharp.org/admissions/01108e65/100043?item=0 which was very helpful. I really want the inquest to make full sense of what exactly happened.

I'll have a good read of your third post after posting this. Thanks again :)

Looks like it must be in this box? CLA/042/IQ/01/068 Inquests (Nos. 83-177)
1 box Former reference: Box Number 68 - 1890

There are some records from the London Metropolitan Archives on Ancestry
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/categ ... _archives/
A quick look I couldn't see anything relevant, but perhaps with checking.

Cheers

This is very kind, thank you so much Maureen :) Sadly though as you say, there's nothing relevant on the LMA's Ancestry records, but I appreciate your input.
