Why can't I find my Great Uncle

Postby AJB » Sat Sep 14, 2019 6:04 pm

Can someone help.

I have problems researching my Great Uncle Joseph Beaver

He can be found in 1891 Census and Family Search has his baptism 24 April 1889, Linchmere, Sussex.

I cannot find his birth or death in any of the register indexes.

He is also cannot be found in 1901 or 1911 census - could he have gone abroad.

Regards

Just out of interest, have you found Joseph and/or his family in the 1901 or 1911 census? Hopefully, they'll provide clues as to whether Joseph was still alive at that point.
I see from his brother Albert Edward's 1916 marriage record that his father William Beaver is described as "deceased". On the image, it looks like one of the witness names might be Langridge (his mother's maiden name).
Also, birth registrations for Edward Albert (b 1896) and brother Henry (b 1893) are on the online GRO index, but not Joseph. So far no results found using "Beaver" or "Langridge".
Joseph's birthplace on the 1891 census is recorded as Haslemere, Surrey; but his baptism obviously occurred (nearby) in Sussex. Have you found a marriage entry for his parents? I didn't find one after a cursory search.

Am wondering if the family may have split up?
The GRO lists a William Alfred Beaver dying in Croydon in 1897 age 36.

In 1903, a boy called J.H. Beaver, aged 14, came to Canada as a farm labourer.

I think the father is Henry William Beaver, born 1862 in Clifton, Gloucestershire. He's living with parents Silas and Lavina in Horsham in 1881.

Hi

Thank you for your responses.

I have found details for all of Joseph's siblings and parents except
No marriage certificate
No details of birth/baptism for Eleanor Matilda Langridge (is this her married name)
No records of any of the family in 1901 1911.
Records of all being alive post 1911 in the UK except for Joseph and Henry William Beaver

Thanks & Regards

I've searched for James Langridge, the teenage "relative" residing with the Beaver family in 1891, but nothing tangible for him so far.

I presume you've seen the British Army WW1 Pension Record for Albert Beaver on Ancestry. Regimental number: 496540. It mentions his trade was "Flour Miller". He enlisted on 13 Jan 1916 and was discharged on 25 Feb 1918, due to being physically unfit for duty.
He had chororditis in his right eye, and opacity of cornea in his left. The record also describes a defective eye he had since childhood:
Date of origin of disability: Since childhood. Place of origin of disability: Hastings. Disability: "Lost the sight in left eye from a corneal ulcer following measles. Vision in right eye has always been defective. Owing to defective vision has had no education".

Question -is Eleanor Matilda Langridge the mother's name of the 1893 and 1896 birth certificates? Also, did Henry Beaver marry?

GRO has entry for Ellen Langridge b 1864 v02B p 130
James Langridge b 1874 vO2B p 144 both Cuckfield Union mmn FUNNELL

They appear to be 7th &12th & last children of parents Abraham & Martha Langridge. I can find no mention of a Ellen/ Eleanor Matilda

James, there is a Dec 1891 Railway record and I think in 1939 he may have been living at Besiah, Chailey Sussex with the following, obtaining his marriage certificate will assist in further ID>

James Langridge 2 Dec 1874 widow
Ivy E Langridge 19 Feb 1914
Charles E Paine
Ronald Morley evacuii

The James H mentioned as going to Canada maybe James Harry b 1875
