Dallaway and Douch, E. Sussex

Postby DianaCanada » Fri Aug 30, 2019 7:54 pm

Am trying to locate Herbert Douch, b. 1888, in 1939 with no luck.
His wife Alice (Dallaway) b. Heathfield, Sussex, 1886 (daughter of John Dallaway and Charlotte Funnell) is there, with her second daughter, Beryl Joy (later married Slidders), an older daughter who had just married (Doris), to Cyril Older, is apparently alone in a flat in another part of town - perhaps Cyril had gone into the military? She is a cashier and bookkeeper.
Alice Douch died 23 Aug 1958 (probate index), lived at 16 Wellington Square, Hastings, the same address given on the 1939, where she was listed as married. Administration to her married daughters.
Herbert died 8 Sep 1946, Hastings (probate), admin to wife Alice and daughter Beryl, latter still single at that time. He was living at 20 St. Andrews Square, Hastings, although apparently Alice was at 16 Wellington Square.
Any thoughts? He seems a little old to have signed up for WWII.
Ideas appreciated!

In case you're unaware, Herbert Douch is mentioned in various newspaper reports circa 1916-1946. The April 1939 report concerns an assault case in which Herbert was struck by his prospective son-in-law Cyril Older. Cyril called Douch a "dirty rotter" and struck him. Daughter Doris Kathleen Douch said her parents had been living apart for three years.

The other newspaper mentions for Herbert:
June 1913 - lengthy wedding mention.
April 1916 - newspaper reports concerned his WW1 military appeal.
March 1924 - fined for driving without an offside light.
August 1924 - summoned for driving without a license.
Oct 1933 - failed to pay NHS and unemployment contributions.
Sept 1946 - death notice.

Thank you, Mo! I will have a look. I had the wedding, should have kept looking!
Maybe he was in jail in 1939?

Looks like Ian found him in 1939. (Actually, the assault case was dismissed).
