Searching for birth records & parents for Joseph Clutterbuck, born c.1804-1811 (1841 census gives age as 30, 1842 burial register gives age as 38).
Joseph was my 3x great grandfather, he lived in Croydon, Surrey in 1841 (listed on 1841 census as not being born in the county) and worked as a policeman. His duties clearly involved working on the railway, which is how he died, in adventurous circumstances, in 1842:
‘A fatal accident happened on Sunday, on the Croydon and Brighton Railway. As a train passed over Croydon Common, a Mr. Cramer got out of a third-class carriage, and walked over the roofs of two carriages, to a first-class carriage. The guard, Joseph Clutterbuck, left his seat to warn the passenger of his danger ; and as he walked over the roof for that purpose, he was dashed against a bridge, falling back on the coupling-chains. His head was shattered to pieces, and he died instantly. A Coroner's Jury have returned a verdict of "Accidental Death." The Spectator, 30th July 1842, page 10’
I would love to find out who Joseph’s parents were, where he was born etc. I’ve been researching my family history since the early 1990s and Joseph is a fascinating ‘brick wall’ that I’d love to resolve.

The image of that burial gives 38 years and the 1841 census ages are rounded down b y up to 5 years so I'd be looking for a birth July 1803-1806.
All the possibles seem to be in Gloucestershire
Joseph 31.1.1805 at Newent s of James and Mary
Joseph 9.11.1806 s of John and Sarah Stroud Independent Chapel(father possibly a publican who died 1837)
Joseph 1.6.1806 s of Daniel and Elizabeth at Dursely
The others at Eastington and Westbury appear on the latter censuses as does the one 1813/4 at Southwark.
If it was me I'd go for James Clutterbuck and wife Mary nee Clifford married 1780 newent died 1840 and 1838.
They had a son George as well so Joseph 's son James George would be named after family.
