John Smith death cert 1924 in London

Postby Mariner Aus » Sun Aug 25, 2019 8:24 pm

Good morning everyone,

A fellow researcher has listed a death date of a John Smith in my family tree which I am trying to clarify. This particular fella was born on the 22nd September 1882 to Liverpool the son of Thomas Smith and Margaret Ann Milligan. I previously found John alive in the 1901 census in Liverpool with his parents and siblings and wasn't sure when he died. The death date provided is the 29th September 1924 to Whipps Cross hospital - London. Could anyone provide me with a link to the GRO for the correct death cert so I can order it to verify?

Thanks in advance

Kind regards

Pieter

There is a John Smith, birth date 22 September 1882, alive on the 1939 register. He was living at 158 Fairfield Road in Droylsden, Lancashire (to the east of Manchester). His profession was ‘storeman sugar confectionary’ and he is listed as married, but the following 2 entries are blacked out.
If you have already ruled this John Smith out, I apologise. If not, then he might be the one you are looking for.

Also, on the 1911 census, his father is listed as having 8 children, 3 dead, 5 living. Katherine/Catherine and Rose Emma are listed as living with him. Do you know the status of the remaining 6?

That one is John James Smith, Sep 1924 West Ham 4a 244. Age 42
On the last page of deaths in the quarter for North Leyton sub-district.

Buried 6 October 1924 at Queens Road Cemetery, Walthamstow.
Register of graves (on ancestry) gives name of purchaser.

John Smith, mother Milligan, born Liverpool 1882 did not have a middle name.

Re the John in Droylsden in 1939, a John Smith, 28, born Little Bolton, was at that same address in 1911. Occupation Goods Receiver. Living with his widowed mother Catherine.

If the John Smith from Droylsden is ruled out, then I think the right John Smith might have died before the 1911 census.
If the census record for his father is correct, and 3 out of 8 children had died, along with Margaret Ann, nee Milligan, then I think it was the 3 sons, John 1882, Thomas 1890 and William James 1892, that had died.
In addition to the 2 daughters living with the father, Caroline Hannah, as Mrs Jones, had a sister, or at least sister-in-law to her husband, living with her in 1911. The name was Agnes Smith, but the age matches up with Mary Agnes Smith. Also, Esther, as Mrs Devlin, was still alive in 1911. That covers the 5 daughters as the 5 children still alive in 1911.

Plus, using 1906 +-5 years as a time period, there is a John Smith buried in Ford Cemetery on 30 June 1910, aged 27. Could that be him?
That would correspond with John Smith aged 27 died Q2/J 1910 West Derby Volume 08B Page 181.

John Smith’s father and 5 sisters on the 1911 census (all in Liverpool area):

Thomas Smith 50, Katherine Smith 27 and Rose Emma Smith 11:
4 8th Lower Milk Street.

Caroline Jones 25 (+ husband + 3 children) and Agnes Smith 17:
57 Shaws Alley.

Esther Devlin 22 (+ husband + 2 children):
229 Beaufort Street S.

Thank you everyone for the replies.

I have a copy of John Smith's death cert for the 26th June 1910 but he died in Litherland - West Derby son of Catherine Smith at 11 Thornton Street. Profession was Rubber labourer. Cause of death TB

I also have the death certs of a John Smith (Journeyman cooper) age 26 died on the 9th April 1908 to Liverpool (25 Marlborough Street). M Smith widow was present at the death. Cause of death TB.

John Smith died age 24 on 18th July 1906 to the Northern hospital - Liverpool. He was a dock labourer living at 74 Boundary Street. J Hughes his bro in law of 74 Boundary St was the witness.

There was also a John Smith who died 15th Feb 1903 age 20 in the Liverpool workhouse from Pneumonia. But he was originally from Toronto Canada and worked as a cattleman on a steamship.

That's all I have been able to find to date. Maybe someone can find a link to John above who died in 1906 or 1908.

Kind regards

Pieter
