John William Jones

Postby LizA77 » Fri Aug 23, 2019 6:12 am

Hi, I’m having trouble finding any record of John William Jones (born 1851 I think) until the 1881 census and beyond. His parents were William Jones and Elizabeth Clement, from the Grimsby, Lincs area. They had another son called Charles Henry Jones born circa 1849. The family disappears from the census records for 1861 and 1871. Any help much appreciated!

Hello and Welcome to the site
There is a burial for a William Jones at St James Grimsby 12 March 1854 age 28 years which may be the father.

Thank you so much. That could explain things! Is there a site which can help with photos of headstones so I could glean some more information? Would it be common for a widow with young children to re marry at that time (1850s)? What else might have been her fate?

Here's the family in 1861. Looks like Elizabeth remarried. The Jones surname and birthplace have been transcribed incorrectly. I think the husband's name is actually Duke Woolas(s). On FMP, there is a Merchant Seaman record for a chap (born 1815) with that name.

Name: John William Jonas
Age: 9
Estimated birth year: 1852
Relation: Boy
Gender: Male
Where born: Grimoby, Lincolnshire, England
Civil Parish: Vessels
Town: Railway Dock
County/Island: Yorkshire
Registration district: Anglesey
Sub-registration district: Holyhead
ED, institution, or vessel: Samuel (2)
Household schedule number: 1
Piece: 4509
Folio: 81

The 1861 census record is on Ancestry. If you scroll forward a page, the next image mentions the Vessel particulars:

Vessel name: Samuel
Port or Place to which she belongs: Hull
Her description and Trade which she is employed: Keel, River Trade
Master: D. Woollass
