John Lyons - help needed

Postby valgilchrist » Sun Aug 18, 2019 9:41 pm

Mystery great grandfather John Lyons
Born 1865 in London

Married twice first 1888 to Louise beech father shown as Robert Lyons coalman
Married second time 1914 to mary Ann Matilda Perry father shown as John Lyons coalman deceased
Died January 1923 in hackney
Can only find a John Lyons born in 1865 to a John Lyons and Ann Ward but this is in Poplar east London. I bought the certificate When I find him on later the census 1891, 1901, 1811 he is shown as being born in Bethnal Green. I have bought a couple of birth certificates for a John Lyons born in 1865 but the names of the parents are wrong
Is the Poplar one correct as poplar is not too far from Bethnal Green
Also there is a death for John Lyons who was married to Ann Ward but showing his occupation as a tin plate worker
There are several things that don’t add up and have been trying to find this link for several years. Any help would be gratefully received

On Ancestry, there are records for this Lyons family which may be of interest (particularly as John and Louisa Lyons reside in Tottenham in the 1901 census).

Father: John Lyons, born c1831 - Spalding, Lincolnshire
Mother: Ann(e) Ward, born c1835 - Gosberton, Lincolnshire
Children: Mary (b 1859 Holbeach); Kate (b 1863 Spalding); John (born 1865 Poplar); Minnie Rebecca (b 1868 Poplar); William Edward (b 1871 Edmonton).

Note: Mary, Kate, and John were baptised together on 4 March 1868 at Bromley St Michael and All Angels,Tower Hamlets.

Lyons family can be found in these census reports:

1861: Holbeach, Lincolnshire
1871: Tottenham
1881: Tottenham - John Jnr (age 15) is living with widowed mother Ann at 5 Cunningham Rd. Occupation: Van Boy Parcel Delivery.

It appears John Lyons Snr died in 1873 in Edmonton. He has various occupations on the census reports and baptism records: labourer, plasterer.

Thank you very much for your reply. I have much of that information but as there were
So many discrepancies I wasn’t sure I had found the right
John Lyons. On balance do you think this is the right connection

John Lyons born Poplar 1865 might have married Emma McDiarmid in Edmonton district in 1895?
They are living in Wood Green with their son Harold in the later census returns. In 1901 John says he was born in Poplar, in 1911 he says Spalding.

Thanks for this but we definitely know he married Louise beech in 1888 as we have other information from family to confirm this
It’s just a mystery with the discrepancies

No, I think John born Poplar married Emma McDiarmid.
Your chap says he was born Bethnal Green?

But there is no other John Lyons born at that time that links to Louise beech and the families were living in Tottenham at various times. But it doesn’t tie together

We have the birth year right as he was 57 when he died in 1923 but we also have the puzzle of his dads names on the two marriage certificates. 1888 says Robert Lyons coalman and the 1914 shows his dad as John Lyons deceased coalman

I got the first certificate but the fathers name is wrong
The second one year of birth is too early. It’s really strange
