In 1911 census returns for Shoreditch

John Lyons - 46, Birth Bethnal Green, Occupation: CABINET WOOD MAKER MACHINEST

His wife is Louisa Lyons, 41

However there is also someone described as a "relative" - Mary Beech 30

Louisa and (her sister?) Mary are Toy Box makers

A question for those more knowledgeable about the numbering of birth registers.

Although earlier (1863) the birth of the 2nd listed John (mother’s name Barry) it appears to be in the same volume (1c) with a higher page number than the later 1865 birth. This is counter-intuitive

How does the numbering work?

LYONS, JOHN Mothers Maiden name BOWEN - GRO Reference: 1865 J Quarter in BETHNAL GREEN Volume 01C Page 248

LYONS, JOHN PHILIP Mothers maiden name BARRY GRO Reference: 1863 J Quarter in BETHNAL GREEN Volume 01C Page 338

The volume number refers to the district - so there will be a vol of this number each year. Hence it’s the year that matters for chronology but the volume number describes the registration district.

Yes, I was fooled by this for years. But as Liz indicates, the actual physical object is presumably branded with year / quarter / volume, so the same volume "number" repeats in each quarter, with a page 1 in each quarter.

What may be useful to know, is that each GRO book or Volume is completed from returns from local register offices, and is done in a specific order by Parish.

Sites such as Marriage finder, use this to find out which church is referenced by the page number. For example, if they know marriages in church ‘A’ went from Page 11 to 14, then church ‘B’ must follow on Page 14 onwards.
So when you tell the site the District, Quarter, Volume and Page, the site will tell you where marriage took place.

As Adrian pointed out, each volume/book is uniquely identified by District, Volume and Quarter, and the full GRO reference tells us on which page in that particular volume we can find the entry.

Who registered the death as they may not have known his exact age. You always have to be aware that the information on a death certificate is only as good as the knowledge of the informant.

Hi

I think it is right as it also matches his ages on the two marriage certificates in 1888 and 1914
