Deciphering a cause of death

Postby paulcwillis » Tue Aug 13, 2019 7:27 pm

Hi all,

I just obtained from GTO the death certificate PDF for one of my relatives, Louisa Toms (nee Willis) who died in 1879 aged 22.

BUT I can't quite decipher the recorded cause of death. Can anyone help?

Here's the death certificate:

Parturition = Childbirth. Not sure what the second word is.

Update: second word is Metroperitonitis = combined inflammation of the uterus and the peritoneum.

The second wird is Metroperitinitis ( or Perimetris), an inflammation of the Uterus.

That's very sad. Did the baby survive, Paul?

Well that's an interesting question.

I found two records of Toms babies born around this time:
George Louis Henry Corbett Toms born 1879,
Buried 4 Dec 1880 at St. Mary Parish, Dover, Kent, England

And

Alfred William D Toms
Born 1879, Death registered in 1906 aged 27

George was the child born 1879, with mother’s Maiden name of Willis. So he survived the birth, but as you know died in 1880, aged 1

Name: TOMS, GEORGE LOUIS HENRY CORBETT
Mother's Maiden Surname: WILLIS

GRO Reference: 1879 D Quarter in DOVER Volume 02A Page 948

So it looks like the baby survived but only for a year or so, although it might be worth ordering the birth and death certificates just to check it is the correct family, as occasionally sisters married brothers or cousins.

P.S. I'd estimate George Louis Henry Corbett Toms' date of birth to be 30th November 1879, in line with how long his mother was ill before she died.

P.P.S. I think Mick edited his post while I was typing mine as it originally asked if you knew which baby had a mother's maiden name of Willis.
