Missing Birth and Baptism records

Postby Will Mundy » Sun Aug 04, 2019 6:22 am

Hello,

I’m researching my great great grandmother Emily Herbert who in the 1939 census said she was born on the 18th January 1862, she was from Greenfield a small hamlet near to Watlington in Oxfordshire. I looked for her birth record online but couldn’t find anything that was right and to make things more confusing there’s no record of her baptism. She was thought to be very religious her father Joseph, was baptised in the Wesleyan Chapel in Watlington, and her mother Anne, was baptised in the cofe in Watlington.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t until 1874 that penalties were introduced for failure to register the birth of a child. Therefore, it is a posibility that Emily’s birth wasn’t registered. However, I have seen a child registered some years after the birth.

Probably not your Emily, but there is a 4 Jan 1862 baptism for an Emily Herbert in Watlington. Mother: Eliza, Abode: Greenfield, Occupation: Servant.

Looks like your Emily's older brother Edwin (b 1856) had a C of E baptism in Watlington. And parents Joseph Herbert and Ann Gearing had a C of E marriage in 1850.

That could be a very good find. Eliza appears to be the sister of Joseph and was baptised at Watlington 6 Oct 1833. Her parents aren't named, but the abode is Christmas Common, the same as on Joseph's baptism.

In 1841 at Greenfield, Watlington there is a Joseph Herbert 35, Joseph 13 and Eliza 8.

Could it be that Emily was raised as Joseph's daughter but was actually his niece?

The only birth I can find though is in 1860.

Following from my last post, in 1861 in the Henley on Thames Workhouse:

E Herbert 25 Almswoman Servant? born Watlington
E Herbert 1 female born Watlington

RG9, Piece 881, Folio 98, Page 8

Hmm, or perhaps not. Eliza married William Norris in 1863 and in 1871 is with him in Swynecombe and has a daughter, Emily, aged 10
