Mary Alice Bowling

Postby ktm2019 » Mon Jul 29, 2019 12:10 am

I have hit a wall with my research and I really hope somebody can help point me in the right direction. I am trying to trace my great grandmother Mary Alice Bowling. I have various dates and places of birth. The 1939 census is the only document with confirmed family members but she is listed as Alice Morgan and lives with her children and their father, Patrick Fitzgibbon but she didn’t marry him. She was previously married to Harold Morgan but he died in WW1. I also know that she was buried in Heaton cemetery, Bolton in 1940
I can’t find any birth records, I have seen various census records under the names Bowling, Balling and Bolling each giving different dates around 1890. A burial record which adds up to 1890 and a marriage certificate giving her birth year around 1892. The only Mary Alice I have found was 1883 but sadly she died a year later, and does have the same birth mothers name, Elizabeth.
Any help at all in which direction to look would be really appreciated. Thank you, Kate.

Was Mary a spinster when she married Harold Morgan?

On her marriage certificate she is listed as a spinster and 21 years old. I thought that was young for a spinster though?

What was the name of her father on the marriage certificate, if one was given?

There is this birth
March 1890 Bolton 8c 483
Bolling, Mary Alice
Mother's Maiden Surname —

Looks like she was illegitimate

You think her mother was called Elizabeth? From the census, with older sisters Ada and Eliza? Birth reg of an Eliza Bolling, Dec 1887, Bolton, also likely illegitimate.

Her burial at Heaton Cemetery, 6 Nov 1940, age 50. In unconsecrated ground, says Roman Catholic

Spinster, in the context of marital status, simply means unmarried - never married, in fact. It's not the same usage as every day speech where spinster tends to mean elderly and unmarried.

1871 census: Elizabeth Bolling (age 14) is described as 'daughter' in the residence of John and Jane Hesford. Birthplace: Walton, Lancs. Occupation: Framer.

1861 census: Elizabeth can be found with mother Jane Bolling in Bolton.

1891 census: Jane Hesford, Elizabeth, and her children are living in Great Bolton. Family is transcribed as "Balling". There is also a daughter named Sarah (age 14) living with the family.

Baptism: 18 May 1877 St James, New Bury, Farnworth, Lancashire, England
Sarah Jane Bowling - [Child] of Elizabeth Bowling
Abode: Bolton Union Workhouse St. James New Bury
Occupation: Single Woman

Possible baptism for Elizabeth Bowling:
Baptism: 15 Mar 1857 St Barnabas, Heapey, Lancashire, England
Elizabeth Bowling - daughter of Jane Bowling, Single Woman
Abode: Wheelton

I'm wondering if Mary Alice Bowling (1883-1884) was also a child of Elizabeth's?
Burial: 28 Oct 1884 St James, New Bury, Farnworth, Lancashire, England
Mary Alice Bowling -
Age: 16 months
Abode: Union Workhouse
