Thomas William Wilson

Postby mchlwebb » Fri Jul 26, 2019 8:03 am

I am trying to trace the birth of my Great Grandfather Thomas William Wilson. The 1939 register shows his birth date as 20 Nov 1876 but it was more likely 1875. He was born in the Hackney area of London. His father was called William and we believe his mother was called Elizabeth. I can find no record of his birth or who his mother was. If anyone can help I would be grateful.

On the 1939 Register, the only Thomas W. Wilson I could find with a birthdate of 20 Nov was b. 1874, living in Brentford and Chiswick, Middlesex. His wife was Lillie and there are five younger Wilsons in the household. Is this your Thomas?

Thanks everyone. I think some of the information is correct but I'm thinking that somewhere along the line some of the children are living with relatives as witnesses to some of the weddings don't match with parents. I will keep searching but the birth in 1874 with the name Davies included does match some other information I have. Thanks again.

Witnesses at a marriage do not have to be family members. They often are but it is not a requirement. Witnesses can be friends, distant relatives or, in some cases I’ve seen, two people who witnessed all the marriages in one particular church. Two people could be complete strangers asked at the last minute. Therefore, if your witnesses do not match with what you know, it does not mean that you should discard the information you have found.
